ICE donates to scholarships

ICE, a nonprofit organization that produces annual entertainment favorites like Bay Jam, Dancing with Our Island Stars, and BayJama Reggae Fest, has awarded more than $180,000 in proceeds from those events for art, music and dance scholarship to local high school students. ICE President David Feder (center) notes that over the past 17 years, ICE scholarships (typically $200 to $500) have enabled students to purchase paints, brushes and canvases; musical instruments; cameras and lenses; dance, music, art and voice lessons; and more to help them pursue their artistic dreams. Surrounding Feder and representing the hundreds of scholarship recipients are members of Coral Shores High School Performing Arts Club. From left to right -- Chloe Butler, Nyan Feder, Tyler Ford, David Feder, Jose Garcia, Luna Rivera, A. J. Comeforo, and Sara Harrelson. To apply for a scholarship, go to keysice.com.

  • Bands:
Men of Leisure -- Great local band from the Upper Keys with an all-original modern pop rock fusion sound. These young artists are the most refreshing sound to hit South Florida yet.

  • Uproot Hootenanny, a five-member band, plays the most entertaining and unique brand of Folk, Rock, Pop, Celtic, Bluegrass, and Country music.  The band plays the East Coast, Florida, and regular stints in Ireland.

  • Joanne Mackell -- A veteran singer/songwriter with a voice that could stop a Mack truck and songs that make you remember the first time you fell in love. Her passionate delivery, outstanding vocal range and commanding stage presence consistently raise the roof and rock the house.

  • Raiford Starke -- Everyone’s favorite “Renegade.” He walks a thin line with a lightning bolt attached by a guitar.  The Raiford Starke Band lights the crowd on fire. From rock to roots, to his band’s funky Florida swamp sound, then on to Flat Pickin’ country and into at times, “An Urban Cow Punk Mayhem.”  Someone once described them as a Freight Train barreling down the tracks out of control but always staying on course.

  • The Doerfels are one of the most exciting and unique new bands to come along in a very long time. Their progressive music is a blend of rock and acoustic music. The Doerfels grew up in a musical family and these five brothers and one sister were playing instruments from the time they could walk.

  • Rod MacDonald was a big part of the 1980s folk revival in Greenwich Village clubs, performing at the Speakeasy, The Bottom Line, Folk City, and the Songwriter's Exchange at the Cornelia Street Cafe for many years. A tenor with a clear voice and wide range, MacDonald is often cited for both his musicality and the content of his songs about political and social events.

  • 20 WT -- Brewed deep in the culture of the Florida Keys in 2001, 20 WT (Twenty Weight) moved to Jacksonville in 2003 to be more centrally located for its fans across the Southeast. The band intelligently combines elements of ska, roots reggae, and groove metal to create a unique new sound.

  • The Aviators -- Lead by the wistful siren Leah Sutter, this impressive young original Soft Rock band is making waves here in the islands.

  • Scott Youngberg – Keys singer songwriter who plays original music with his own special flair.

  • David Feder and Salagua Azul --   Guitarist and songwriter David Feder plays original Hillbilly Flamenco, Blues, Latin Jazz.  Dave's music is heard worldwide and has been a favorite on the World Music Scene for over 20 years.
